I have an RP friend who's very visible and who most of you know.
He doesn't Facebook.
I know this because I asked him if he had one recently and if I could add him. His response was that he didn't have it. What he left out of the conversation, but I know just from many years experience being his friend and learning his little idiosynchracies, habits and philosophies, is that he doesn't need one either. I also know that if he does have a Facebook as friendly as him and I are, he will NEVER tell me. And what he also didn't say was that if he did have a Facebook, he wouldn't put all his private information out there for the world to see.
With this in mind, I'm writing this post. I do not understand what the big deal is about Facebook's new privacy settings. Why anyone is getting up in arms about it, really, when all the users have to do is, umm, not POST the information?
I mean it's pretty clear cut to me.
I use a fake name on Facebook. It's my RP name. And, yes, I know the entire DM community knows my RP name as does what is left of the AOL RP community but that's not the same as my real name.
The first thing I did when I got my Facebook? Was lock that bitch down.
When they changed the settings? I checked and doublechecked it to make sure it wasn't giving out any information I didn't want it to.
Then I went a step further. I didn't fill out any of the information fields!!!!!!!! Because it's none of Facebook's business or anyone on FB what my personal information is! The photos tab? Is going to remain blank. There is one photo of me on Facebook. If you can't figure out what I look like from that photo, well, guess what, you're an idiot.
I'm not going to supply you with any more photos of me. As for the rest of my information? It's not there. It's never going to be there. No one can steal any of it or use it against me. I'm not going to eventually be FIRED from a job because, uhh, again, I haven't put it up for the world to see.
So I really don't get what all the hoopla is about.
Yeah, I know, you want your friends to know your birthday. But if they are your friends, in real life that is, off these damn computers, shouldn't they already KNOW your birthday? And even if they don't, so what? Call them on the phone and tell them what it is. Don't put it on your Facebook so it can be tied to your real name and give Identity Thieves more of a chance to pretend to be you.
Duh.
As for your names. I wouldn't be putting my real name on any social networking site or on the web, PERIOD, so that my 3rd grade boyfriend can contact me and ask me what I'm up to these days. Trust me, he was funky looking in 3rd grade with buck-teeth and I thought he was hot because I was 8 years old but I'm fairly sure he's even funkier looking now and I don't need to be talking to him! Nor do I care if he blossomed into a *real* hot guy and has straight teeth! He was someone I went to school with when I was eight and that is what he will remain.
All the people I have met in my life who are in my past are there because I put them there and for some very good reasons! I don't need to be contacting them now to reminisce and catch up!
I REMEMBER, quite vividly thank you, vomiting in the toilet on my 21st birthday in Brian's apartment and giving lapdances to all his friends who proceeded to stuff money in my panties, thus earning me over a hundred bucks! I was hammered beyond belief. I thought I was going to die. I don't need to talk to Brian or his buddies now about it! Or in the future! That is all we have in common. That one night.
In Brian's case, I dated him for, oh jeez, six months? He's not that important obviously.
The same goes for all the people I went to school with, worked with, went to church with, etc. If I do not speak to you right as of this moment? You don't need to be on my Facebook friends list because hey, newsflash! WE ARE NOT FRIENDS!
Neither are the 200 someodd people who ARE on my friend's list my actual friends!
They are random strangers on the Internet who just so happen to play Mafia Wars like I do. I don't know any of them. I may comment to their walls and thank them for helping me, gifting me, etc, but other than that, I don't care what is happening in their lives just like they don't care what's happening in mine.
So WHY would I give these people my personal information, huh?
I haven't given any of YOU my personal information and a lot of you I do know online for many years! That still doesn't give you a right to know what political party I am a member of, what my birthday is, where I worked, etc. None of it is your business.
I wish people on the Internet would exercise more common sense. I roleplay with you all. That's all you need to be concerned with. What I am doing in the RP chatroom with my character and as it pertains to your character.
If you are fortunate enough to have a closer bond with me where I speak with you in IMs about my private life, that means I trust you enough not to go blabbing it to every Tom, Dick and Harry. And whatever I put out for public consumption, is carefully worded so it cannot be traced back to the me IRL.
But for the regular Joe Schmoe's I play with? They know NADA!
As far as Facebook goes, I play Mafia Wars. That's all my FB "Friends" need to be concerned with. The rest of my private life belongs to me and me alone.
The other day my sister complained to me that my FB name wasn't my real one and I was making it difficult for people we know to get in touch with me.
I smiled at her and said, "That's the point."
Because just like I don't want anyone from my past cropping up, I also don't want my RL friends knowing what I do online! It's none of their business!
So I guess the question is, why isn't the rest of the Internet aware of this simple concept?
There is absolutely no reason to be upset with Facebook about sharing your information with the world wide web if you have NOT provided the information to begin with. I haven't. It's not that hard. I really wish people would stop making drama out of things that don't need to be dramatic in the first place. Keep your mouth shut, or in this case, keep your information to yourself and you won't have a problem. ::Shaking head::
